When we think about the future, we can already imagineartificial intelligence (AI)<\/strong> as a pervasive technology. But we\u2019re not just talking about self-driving cars and virtual assistants: even city hall could become the stage for a digital revolution<\/strong>. The adoption of AI-based technologies can lead to transformative improvements in efficiency, transparency, and accountability, creating a more robust platform for governance and public service. <\/p>

Our article provides a broad and contextualized overviewof the impact of artificial intelligence on public administration (PA)<\/strong>, highlighting not only the potential benefits but also the practical applications already in use, including in Italy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The PNRR has the budget, AgID has the roadmap: together, they are charting the course toward a more efficient and transparent public administration. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

AgID is also involved in measuring and monitoring digitalization in Italy through indicators such as the DESI (Digital Economy and Society Index)<\/strong>, introduced by the European Commission to assess member countries\u2019 digital progress. After searching the INPS website, users will be able to \u201cinteract\u201d with a Virtual Assistant<\/strong> capable of providing accurate answers and guiding them through the wide range of benefits and services offered by the Institute. <\/p>

Process mining<\/strong> is one of the techniques being implemented: it uses data to visualize and analyze existing processes, identifying inefficiencies and areas for improvement. Data analytics technologies can also assist in energy management and urban planning, making the use of resources such as water and electricity more efficient. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Who doesn't like transparency?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Even the most transparent processes can benefit from the integration of AI. How? Think of blockchain as a way to track and record every decision, transaction, and operation<\/strong>, creating a reliable, immutable public ledger. Some municipalities are exploring ways to track the use of public funds, allowing citizens to monitor in real time how their money is being spent. <\/p>

Norway\u2019s experience is particularly noteworthy: a chatbot<\/strong> has been implemented in more than 100 municipalities, facilitating one million interactions with citizens in 2021. This example shows how digitization can facilitate access to public services while also increasing transparency<\/strong>. <\/p>

In Italy as well, the City of Siena has introduced a chatbot named \u201cCaterina,\u201d which serves as a point of interaction for citizens, providing information and support. This initiative could serve as a model for other Italian cities looking to improve transparency through technology. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The DESI highlights that, although Italy shows overall improvement in digitization, there is still room for further progress, particularly in digital public services. <\/p>

In some Italian cities, AI systems are already being used to optimize bus routes in real time, reducing travel times and improving punctuality. In the healthcare sector, AI algorithms can be used to predict spikes in emergency room demand, enabling better allocation of medical resources. Other examples include the use of chatbots to handle citizen inquiries, improving the speed and accuracy of responses. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Singapore is using artificial intelligence to improve waste management, while Dubai has integrated AI into the maintenance of infrastructure, such as traffic lights and water distribution networks. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
